Breakdance Competition

Oct 21, 2006

Not too much to report in this update. The forums were hacked (again), but everything is restored now; no major damage was done. I also think I've finally worked out the bug in all of my update forms, so it should be a lot easier to update pages now. I've been working on some new photography recently, and another personal project, but progress is slow. I'll try to keep writing regular updates and make this site a little more bloggy to keep things interesting.

Last night was the breakdance competition at RIT. This was like the fourth or fifth competition that's been hosted since I've been at RIT. The format was actually pretty terrible. They paired dancers together and had two round battles between them, and the winners moved on. In previous competitions it was just a free-for-all, and while disorganized, the format used in this competition had a tendency to kill the mood between dancers. Two kids would battle, the MC would stop the music, everyone would spend a few minutes dicking around then the winners would be announced. It moved very slow, and everything was made worse by the most annoying MC I think RIT could have chosen, who decided to sing us about five of his very own rap songs before the competition even began. They were not good rap songs by anyone's standards. I went on once or twice during intermission, as I'm not really skilled enough to actually battle someone yet. Eventually it came down to two competitors, Claire, one of the two girls in the competition, and Tim, a popper. It was pretty close, but Tim won. Hopefully in future competitions the format is worked out a little better and it will flow smoother than this. In the meantime, I'll head back to the practice room…
